The Idea Behind the University
USIM is built on a single academic proposition, and it is worth understanding before anything else.
Malaysian higher education, like most systems, separates religious study from scientific study. One faculty handles theology, another handles medicine, and the two rarely meet. USIM rejects that division. Its stated purpose is the integration of naqli and aqli knowledge – revealed knowledge and knowledge arrived at through reason.
In practice this means a medical student encounters Islamic ethics as part of the discipline rather than as an elective, and a Quranic studies student engages with research method rather than only tradition. The university runs faculties in medicine, dentistry, engineering and Islamic finance alongside syariah and Quran and Sunnah studies, and treats them as parts of one project.
Whether the integration succeeds is a question academics argue about. What matters here is that it shapes everything the channel publishes.
What a University Channel Carries
Expect something closer to an institutional archive than a television schedule.
Lectures and seminars
Public talks, visiting scholars and academic sessions, usually recorded in full rather than edited into segments.
Convocation ceremonies
Graduation is the single largest broadcast event in any university’s year, watched by families who cannot attend in person.
Research communication
Findings explained for audiences outside the relevant faculty.
Campus life
Student activities, sports, competitions and events across the Nilai campus.
Religious programming
Recitation, talks and Ramadan activities, produced within an academic setting rather than a broadcast one.
University information
Admissions, programmes and announcements for prospective students and their parents.
Learning by Making It
The part that distinguishes a university channel from every other channel on this site.
At a commercial broadcaster, output is the point and the staff are professionals. At a university, the production itself is partly the teaching. Students operate cameras, edit footage, write scripts and present – work that doubles as coursework and portfolio.
That has consequences worth setting expectations around
Production values vary
Some output is polished; some is clearly a learning exercise.
Output is uneven across the year
Activity follows the academic calendar, not a broadcast schedule.
Content serves the institution first
This is university communication, not general-audience programming.
The audience is specific
Students, staff, alumni, families and prospective applicants, rather than the public at large.
None of that is a criticism. It is simply a different purpose from a channel competing for ratings.
How USIM Began
The university is younger than its scope suggests.
It started as Kolej Universiti Islam Malaysia, an Islamic university college, and was granted public university status in 1998 – making it the country’s twelfth.
The permanent campus at Nilai opened in 2005, with the medical faculty remaining in Selangor. Autonomous status followed in the middle of the next decade.
Media came as the university grew, initially as a web presence and then as a video operation. Like most university channels, it developed alongside the institution rather than being planned from the start.
The AlHijrah Connection
USIM does not work in isolation from Malaysia’s Islamic broadcasting sector.
The university has collaborated with TV AlHijrah, Malaysia’s free-to-air Islamic channel, on approaches to religious communication. For a channel built around Islamic broadcasting, a partner institution with faculties in both syariah and the sciences is a natural fit.
For viewers, the practical point is that academic material produced here sometimes finds a wider audience through broadcast channels that USIM TV itself cannot reach.
