Bernama TV Live Streaming – Watch Malaysia’s News Agency Channel

When a Malaysian newspaper credits a story to “Bernama”, this is where it came from. The national news agency supplies copy to newsrooms across the country – and it also runs its own television channel.

Watching Bernama TV means watching the source rather than a broadcaster’s version of it. The live feed sits above, free to watch.

The Wire Service With a Camera

Most viewers have never thought about where news comes from before it reaches a channel.

A news agency sits underneath the whole industry. Reporters are stationed across the country and abroad, filing copy that newspapers, radio stations, websites and television newsrooms then buy, edit and publish under their own mastheads. Readers see the masthead. The agency stays invisible.

Bernama fills that role in Malaysia. It is the national agency, government-owned, feeding material to competing newsrooms who then shape it to their own audience and tone.

Bernama TV is that same operation, broadcasting directly.

Why That Changes What You Watch

The agency model shapes the channel in ways that are easy to notice once you know to look.

Less packaging

Agency journalism is built for other journalists, so the output tends toward the plain and the factual rather than the dramatic.

More proceedings

Press conferences, official statements and announcements often run at greater length than a commercial bulletin would allow.

Broader spread

Agencies must cover everything, including subjects too minor for a ratings-driven newsroom.

Fewer personalities

Presenters do not dominate in the way anchors do on commercial news.

Speed over analysis

The agency’s core business is getting information out quickly, and the channel reflects that priority.

Whether that suits you depends on what you want. Viewers after opinion and debate usually look elsewhere. Viewers who want to hear a statement in full, without a middle layer, tend to prefer it.

Four Languages, One Newsroom

Only two television news channels in Malaysia broadcast in four languages. This is one of them.

LanguageRole
MalayPrimary broadcast language
EnglishNews and current affairs output
MandarinCommunity news coverage
TamilCommunity news coverage

The same newsroom produces all of it, which is a different arrangement from separate language desks operating in parallel. Material gathered once is delivered four ways.

Sign Language on the News

A detail worth knowing, and one few Malaysian channels can claim.

Bernama TV became the second television station in the country to include sign language interpretation in its news broadcasts, after RTM. For deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, that turned a news channel from something to read captions on into something to actually follow.

Accessibility rarely features in discussions about which channel to watch. For households that need it, it decides the question entirely.

From Wire Copy to Broadcast

Bernama did not set out as a broadcaster, and getting there took some negotiating.

The agency first sought permission to run its own television channel in the mid-1990s. The request was turned down. Instead, the government suggested it produce video news items – material other broadcasters could use, rather than a channel of its own.

So that is what it did. The agency built video capability while remaining a supplier, and the television operation was formally established toward the end of that decade. Actual broadcasting began years later, in 2008.

A rebrand followed in the 2010s, when the channel spent a few years as Bernama News Channel before returning to its original name. High-definition broadcasting arrived in the early 2020s.

One Newsroom, Four Outputs

The television channel is one part of a larger operation.

Radio deserves a mention here. Bernama launched the country’s first station devoted entirely to news, running hourly bulletins and rolling updates, and it draws on the same reporting that feeds this channel.

For anyone following a developing story, the two work well together – radio while moving, television when settled.
