TV IKIM Live Streaming – Watch IKIM’s Islamic Programming Online

TV IKIM comes from an unusual place. Not a broadcaster, not a media group – a government research institute whose job is explaining Islam, and which built a radio station and a video channel to do it.

Understanding that origin explains why the output sounds the way it does.

What IKIM Actually Is

Most Malaysians know the radio station. Fewer know what sits behind it.

IKIM is a research institute established in the early 1990s under the Prime Minister’s Department. Its work is intellectual rather than devotional – publishing books and papers, running conferences, producing commentary on Islam’s relationship with law, science, economics and public policy.

Media came later, as a way of carrying that work beyond academic circles. The institute’s media centre now combines radio and online video under one operation, and TV IKIM is the video half of it.

The motto translates as “understanding Islam, building civilisation”. It is a fair summary of the editorial approach.

Understanding, Not Preaching

The distinction matters, and it shows in the content.

A great deal of Islamic broadcasting is devotional – recitation, sermons, worship guidance. IKIM’s output leans instead toward explanation. Why a ruling exists. How a principle applies to a modern situation. What a misconception got wrong and where it came from.

That produces a particular tone:

Discussion over delivery

Panel formats and interviews rather than one speaker addressing an audience.

Academics and specialists

Contributors are often researchers, lecturers or professionals rather than only religious teachers.

Contemporary framing

Subjects are approached through current issues – economics, technology, family law, public ethics.

Open to outside questions

The institute’s remit includes explaining Islam to people who are not Muslim, so material is often pitched to listeners without assumed background.

For viewers wanting recitation and worship programming, other channels serve that better. For viewers wanting the reasoning behind things, this is closer to the mark.

Where to Find the Stream

A practical point before you look for it on a set-top box.

TV IKIM is an internet channel. It has no myFreeview number, no Astro slot and no terrestrial signal. The institute describes its media function as broadcasting through radio and internet television, and the video side has stayed online since it began.

What this means:

An internet connection is required – there is no over-the-air alternative

No channel scanning will find it

Location does not restrict access, since there is no transmitter range

The radio side is different – IKIMfm does broadcast on FM across several states

Radio Came First

The sequence is worth knowing, because the television channel grew out of the radio station rather than the other way round.

IKIM launched its radio service in 2001, taking over from an earlier Islamic radio slot run by the national broadcaster. It built a following over the following decade, expanding onto FM frequencies in Sabah and Sarawak as well as the peninsula, and its signal reaches listeners in neighbouring countries.

The station has carried three names across its life – starting as IKIM.fm, becoming Radio IKIM at the end of the 2010s, then settling as IKIMfm in the 2020s. The programming approach stayed consistent throughout.

Video followed as the institute expanded into digital media. Much of what appears on the television side originates with the same presenters, guests and subject matter that fill the radio schedule.

From Lectures to Discussion

Output spans several formats, most of them conversational.

Panel discussion on religious, social and policy questions, typically with more than one specialist in the room.

Interviews with academics, professionals and religious scholars, running longer than a news segment would allow.

Explanatory programming working through concepts in Islamic law, ethics and history for a general audience.

Current affairs examined through an Islamic lens – legislation, economic policy, social questions.

Institute events including conferences, lectures and forums that IKIM itself organises.

Recitation and devotional content, though it forms a smaller share than on dedicated Islamic broadcast channels.

TV IKIM and TV AlHijrah

Both are government-linked Islamic media. They are not competitors so much as different tools.
